Typically taken as an extract for its distinctive herbaceous aroma and health benefits, It has applications in Non-Western and Traditional Chinese Medicine and has been used in traditional medicinal practices for hundreds of years. Oil from the stems and leaves of the plant contain numerous compounds, one of which is Thujone. The parasite fighting properties of Thujone have been used to treat intestinal worms as far back as Ancient Egypt. Wormwood contains antioxidant properties from a compound known as Chamazulene, which combats oxidative stresses on the body associated with cancer, heart disease, and Alzheimer’s. Artemisinin, another beneficial compound found in Wormwood contains pain-relieving and anti-inflammatory properties. It is used to relieve osteoarthritis, a painful condition resulting from joint inflammation, as well as abdominal cramps and diarrhea.
